TMI Best Paper Award 2026

The IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (TMI) invites nominations for the Best Paper Award, recognizing outstanding contributions published in the journal. This prestigious award honors a paper that demonstrates exceptional innovation, quality, and impact in the field of medical imaging.

Eligibility: Any paper published (i.e., final publication, not Early Access) in the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (T-MI) for five previous years (for example, in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025). Nominations should include:

a. Nominator.
b. Bibliographic information for the paper.
c. A short statement of support (less than 500 words) explaining the rationale for the nomination.

Judging shall be based on originality, subject matter, timeliness, potential impact, and presentation quality.

For the T-MI Best Paper Award nomination, the following criteria applies to ensure the fairness and integrity of the nomination/selection process:

a. A minimum of three valid nominations is required.
b. The nominator has not co-authored paper(s) with the nominated paper’s authors in the past 10 years.
c. The nominator is not a former supervisor or student of a nominated paper’s author.
d. A nominator’s paper has not been nominated for an award by an author of the nominated paper (i.e., no cross-nomination).
e. No self-nominations.

Nominations for the 2026 Medical Imaging Best Paper Award must be submitted through an online nomination system no later than 30 November 2026.

T-MI Best Paper Award selection schedule and process:

1 September:
The T-MI EIC solicits nominations from the Editorial Board, Guest Editors, and readership through a published notice. The EiC forms a T-MI Best Paper Award Committee of senior editorial board members to screen the nominations once they are received.

1 December:
The T-MI Best Paper Award Committee, chaired by the EIC of the journal, screens the nominations. The chair will distribute the list of nominated papers to the T-MI Best Paper Award Committee for final selection.

17 December:
Selection is completed and the EIC of T-MI notifies the recipients, with a copy to the Executive Office. T-MI Best Paper Award will be presented at the ISBI Conference Award Ceremony, in the name of the four sponsoring societies: IEEE-EMBS, IEEE-SPS, IEEE-NPSS, and IEEE-UFFC.
