AI for TMI (AI4TMI) Initiative
February 6, 2025
At IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (TMI), we are proud to introduce the AI for TMI (AI4TMI) initiative, our ambitious program to harness the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) for enhancing the review and dissemination of cutting-edge medical imaging research. Our goal is to improve the quality and efficiency of the peer review process, while maintaining the high standards of excellence that TMI is known for. This initiative reflects our longstanding commitment to continuous innovation and adaptation in response to the evolving landscape of medical imaging and scientific publishing. We will envision the following initial tasks for AI4TMI:
Optimize Editorial Workflow
- Develop AI tools to assist in manuscript triage, ensuring fast and accurate matching of submissions to handling editors and reviewers.
- Utilize machine learning algorithms to analyze performance data of associate editors and reviewers, enhancing accountability for editorial performance.
- Experiment with large multimodal foundation models to support editorial decision-making, while preserving the critical role of human judgment.
- Explore AI applications in identifying potential ethical concerns, plagiarism, and conflicts of interest during the review process.
Ensure Data Security and Compliance
- Prioritize data privacy and security in all AI applications and adhere to best practices for managing sensitive information.
Promote Community Engagement
- Share insights, outcomes, and best practices from AI4TMI with the broader medical imaging and AI research communities.
- Collaborate with all stakeholders, including authors, reviewers, and editorial board members, to refine and expand AI applications.
We have already begun applying machine learning techniques to enhance editor and reviewer performance analytics. Additionally, we are piloting an AI assistant for manuscript assignment. Looking ahead, we aim to expand the range of AI-driven tools across the editorial process, engage with the TMI Steering and Advisory Committees and global experts to ensure responsible and beneficial AI integration. We welcome your suggestions, participation, and partnership in this initiative.
